Artist Studios now available

Metro Arts is transformting the Norman Park substation into the MAVA Arts Studio and Workshop – providing much needed studio space and equippment for local artists.

The Studio + Workshop will launch as a collaborative space for artists and makers to create and collaborate. With cutting-edge tools for woodworking, metalwork, and digital fabrication – artists and general public will be able to access the space to build and create works.

Everyone is invited for the public relaunch of this space this August

About the Space
The Metro Arts Visual Arts Substation (‘MAVA Substation’) was formerly known as Substation No. 9; and was used to supply power to Brisbane’s long forgotten tram system.

There’s a bunch of these beautiful buildings around Brisbane, many of which now house various cool arts things across Brisbane. Since 2007 Metro Arts has leased the substation from Brisbane City Council –  and  provided the space to local artists to access.

Since late 2020, Metro Arts has worked to revitalise the Substation –  with major works and a new program offering. The MAVA Substation will be a vital making hub for artists, set to come alive with more artists and art than ever before.

Be part of the space
We are now accepting expressions of interest for artist studio space rentals at the MAVA Studio.

Four spaces are available within the studio for visual artists to lease. The Studio is to be shared by four artists each with an individual workspace, shared storage and pin up facilities, and a larger communal workspace. As part of their tenancy, the leasing artists will have access to a discounted membership to the MAVA Workshop and Digital Studio housed onsite.

Metro Arts is now taking expressions of interest. Email info(at) for more information.
